Algorithmic Trading from a Mobile Phone: The Reality

MetaTrader 5 is one of the most advanced trading platforms for developing and managing algorithmic trading systems, commonly referred to as Expert Advisors (EAs). However, MT5 does not support running EAs directly on its mobile app. Why? Because an EA needs continuous, uninterrupted internet access to execute trades, manage risk parameters, and respond to market changes in real-time. A mobile device, on the other hand, often enters sleep mode, suspending apps and preventing an EA from interacting with the market.

Why Can’t EAs Run on the Mobile MT5 App?

Continuous Internet Requirement: The EA must remain online 24/7 to respond instantly to price updates and signals.
Mobile Power-Saving Mode: Your phone automatically goes into sleep or power-save modes, which disconnects the app from the internet and pauses background processes.
App Environment Limitations: Mobile MT5 apps are built chiefly for manual trading, not hosting a constantly active algorithmic bot.

The Only Real “Mobile” Solution: VPS + Desktop

The only reliable way to run an EA and manage it from your phone is to host MetaTrader 5 on a Windows VPS server. Essentially, you install and run your trading robot on the VPS, then remotely access that server via your phone. This approach:

Guarantees 24/7 operation of your robot, because the VPS is always online.
Ensures stable connectivity with your broker and minimal latency, especially if the VPS is located near the broker’s data center.
Allows phone-based control using RDP apps on iOS or Android—so you can monitor and adjust settings anytime, anywhere.

Beware of Third-Party “Mobile Bot” Services

Some third-party services claim to run trading robots directly from a mobile phone interface. In many cases, they physically hold your account credentials, broker logins, or have direct access to your MT5 accounts. This opens up potential risks, from unauthorized trade manipulation to more serious security threats. If you value safety and transparency, it’s best to maintain direct control via your own VPS installation.

Bottom line: If you do not personally host your EA, you’re effectively handing someone else unrestricted access to your entire trading account.
